A PRAW Alternative for Public Reddit Data
PRAW is a Python wrapper around Reddit's official API and needs Reddit app credentials. If you only read public posts, comments, and search, call /v1/reddit over HTTPS from any language with a Bearer key.
What this is not
- Not a drop-in PRAW replacement: no login, posting, voting, inbox, or moderation.
- Not a Python library and not a drop-in PRAW replacement.
- Not affiliated with the PRAW project.
- Not Reddit's official API, and not affiliated with or endorsed by Reddit Inc.
- Not a way around Reddit's Data API terms or app-registration process. If you need official access, apply through Reddit.
- Read-only public data. No posting, commenting, voting, messaging, or moderation.
- No logged-in user data: no inboxes, saved or upvoted items, private or quarantined communities.
- Not a full historical archive or deleted-content recovery tool.
- You remain responsible for how you collect, store, and use Reddit data. This page is not legal advice.

Which “PRAW alternative” do you need?
Need another Python wrapper? See Async PRAW’s docs. Want raw official HTTP + OAuth? Use Reddit’s developer docs. Only need public data without managing Reddit app credentials and egress? Use SpideyData /v1/reddit.
What this alternative covers
Any-language REST
curl, Node, Go, Python requests—no PRAW dependency required for public reads.
Bearer key
No Reddit client id/secret for these public reads.
Posts / search / comments
Map common PRAW read patterns to /v1/reddit routes.
Comment jobs
Async deep collection without building your own crawler loop.
Subreddit monitors
Forward-looking new-post collection as JSON.
When PRAW still wins
Write, mod, user OAuth flows, and Python object models—keep PRAW.
PRAW vs SpideyData /v1/reddit
What it is
PRAW: Python wrapper for Reddit's official API (needs Reddit app credentials)
SpideyData /v1/reddit: Managed HTTPS JSON API for public reads; any language
Auth
PRAW: Reddit client id/secret + OAuth modes
SpideyData /v1/reddit: SpideyData Bearer API key
Public read
PRAW: Yes via official API
SpideyData /v1/reddit: Yes
User data / write / mod
PRAW: Yes via official API
SpideyData /v1/reddit: No
Language
PRAW: Python (also Async PRAW)
SpideyData /v1/reddit: Any HTTP client
Minimal REST read
- Create a SpideyData API key.
- Replace a PRAW public read with the matching /v1/reddit route.
- Keep PRAW when you need write, mod, or user-authorized flows.
$ curl -sS -G "$SPIDER_BASE_URL/v1/reddit/posts" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SPIDER_API_KEY" \
--data-urlencode "subreddit=datascience" \
--data-urlencode "sort=new" \
--data-urlencode "limit=25"PRAW → REST mapping (reads only)
Illustrative mappings for public reads: subreddit.new → GET /v1/reddit/posts?subreddit=…&sort=new; search → GET /v1/reddit/search; submission(id) → GET /v1/reddit/posts/{id}; comments → GET /v1/reddit/posts/{id}/comments or async POST …/comments; about → GET /v1/reddit/sub/{name}/about. No mapping for reply(), upvote(), inbox, user.me(), or subreddit.mod.* — those stay with official OAuth / PRAW.
Need another Python wrapper instead?
If your goal is still a Python library over Reddit’s official API, consider Async PRAW and PRAW’s own docs (praw.readthedocs.io / asyncpraw.readthedocs.io). We do not claim PRAW is broken or deprecate it.
Is this the right fit?
Choose this path for managed public Reddit JSON. Do not expect:
- Full historical Reddit archive or deleted-content recovery
- Keyword or brand-mention monitoring inbox
- Private, quarantined, or logged-in-only content
- Official Reddit API approval bypass or write/mod OAuth replacement
- Hard-coded credit unit prices on this page—see Pricing for meters
- Drop-in PRAW compatibility
- Statements that PRAW is dead or unusable
Credits & billing
Public reads and successful deliveries use Plan Credits. Exact meters and rates follow Pricing; failed requests on our side are not charged when billing is active. Confirm live meters in Pricing and the Reddit API docs before publishing numbers.
