Reddit API Without OAuth: What's Actually Possible

Reddit's official API uses OAuth. Here is what you can and cannot do without setting up your own OAuth app—public read-only options, their limits, and when you still need OAuth.

Introduction

The official Reddit API expects OAuth. If you only need public posts, comments, and search, a managed read-only API with a Bearer key avoids running your own OAuth app—but anything user-scoped or write still requires Reddit OAuth.

“Without OAuth” ≠ without authentication: you still use an API key. Updated 2026.

What this is not

  • Not a bypass of Reddit OAuth for user data or write actions.
  • Not an API for Reddit client apps.
  • Not Reddit's official API, and not affiliated with or endorsed by Reddit Inc.
  • Not a way around Reddit's Data API terms or app-registration process. If you need official access, apply through Reddit.
  • Read-only public data. No posting, commenting, voting, messaging, or moderation.
  • No logged-in user data: no inboxes, saved or upvoted items, private or quarantined communities.
  • Not a full historical archive or deleted-content recovery tool.
  • You remain responsible for how you collect, store, and use Reddit data. This page is not legal advice.

Why the official API uses OAuth

Reddit’s official API is built around app registration and OAuth so Reddit knows which application is calling and, for user actions, which user authorized it. That is the right model for apps that act on behalf of users. For current rules and limits, read Reddit’s own sources: the developer platform and the OAuth2 documentation. We do not restate official limits or prices here.

“Can I just use .json URLs?”

Adding .json to a Reddit URL is a behavior of Reddit’s own site. Whether it works, how fast, and under what terms is decided by Reddit and can change. We do not teach ways around Reddit’s limits or anonymous scraping farms. If your real question is DIY versus managed collection, see Scrape Reddit Without the Official API.

Option A: free tools, no key

No account or key. Capped at 10 requests per IP per 24 hours, up to 100 comments or 25 posts per run; NSFW excluded.

Option B: managed public-read API

Authenticate with your SpideyData API key, not a Reddit token. You do not supply Reddit cookies or proxies; Reddit egress is handled server-side.

bash
# Illustrative shape — confirm path and params in the live docs
curl -sS -H "Authorization: Bearer $SPIDER_API_KEY" \
  "$SPIDER_BASE_URL/v1/reddit/search?q=web+scraping&limit=5"

Endpoints cover search, posts, comments, subreddit metadata, async comment jobs, and subreddit monitors. Successful reads use Credits—see Pricing. Product comparison: Reddit API alternative. Reference: Reddit API docs.

When you still need OAuth

Use the official Reddit API with OAuth when you need write actions, user-authorized data, moderation, or an official commercial relationship with Reddit. In Python, PRAW is the common wrapper for that path—compare in Reddit API vs PRAW.

FAQ

Is there a free Reddit API without OAuth?

The free tools run without any key but are capped. The managed API requires a SpideyData key and uses Credits.

Is there a GitHub project for this?

Open-source projects typically still use Reddit OAuth or DIY scraping; evaluate each one’s terms and maintenance yourself.

Can I use this for an Android or third-party Reddit client app?

No. This is not an API channel for Reddit client apps and offers no logged-in user features.

How do I get Reddit API access in 2026?

Official access goes through Reddit’s developer platform and app registration. A managed public-read API is a separate option for public data only.
